Case study: Team Coaching – Global Investment Team

Our client was an international asset management firm with an investment team that needed to develop a clear strategy for the investment business (across asset classes, including portfolio management, research and trading), operate more effectively as a cohesive leadership team and partner effectively with the distribution channels.

Our client was an international asset management firm with an investment team that needed to develop a clear strategy for the investment business (across asset classes, including portfolio management, research and trading), operate more effectively as a cohesive leadership team and partner effectively with the distribution channels. We worked with the Chief Investment Officer to develop an approach that combined individual and team development in parallel. Each investment leader worked with a coach on their own personal leadership development with information provided by the firms 360-degree feedback tool combined with the Hogan Personality Suite. Each leader prepared their own development plans to review with the Chief Investment Officer.

The team development took place through two, two-day offsites. All team members were interviewed in advance of the first offsite to identify the strengths, development areas and key issues that might be influencing the performance of the team. All members completed the Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team which was combined with the Hogan Personality Suite data to provide developmental insights into the team.

The offsites combined team development work and focusing on the business agenda for the team. The team moved from an ‘operating committee’ to a ‘leadership team’, collectively they trust increased, difficult issues were openly discussed and dealt with and clearer lines and individuals were more committed to the teams’ goals and objectives. Individuals worked on their own personal leadership and development issues and brought greater awareness to the role of leadership at the team level.
